Thanks for creating and sharing the Windows 10 Rollback Utility. I tried it today on a Sony VAIO that had been inadvertently upgraded to Windows 10 from Windows 7 over 30 days ago.
Unlike your demonstration video, there was no “Windows 7 (Archived) 64-Bit Edition (D:)” or similar partition listed, just “Windows 10 64-Bit Edition (C:) 918GiB”.
Does your rollback utility require a factory restore partition to be present? Or for less than 30 days to have elapsed since the upgrade to Windows 10?

Hi Miles,
Unfortunately after 30 days Microsoft has coded Windows 10 to delete all remaining traces of the previous installation to free up space on your disk.
After the thirty days have passed, recovery is unfortunately no longer possible.

Of course that is quite different from the “Go back to Windows 7/8.1” feature, but it does offer a way to restore the original OS.

then go to Steve Gibson’s site & D/L & run his
“Never10” free app. It’s just 82kb & does not install.
Just run it & you’ll never see any more upgrade to WIN10 nags.

I bought a new computer which has windows 10 pre installed need to down grade it to either 7 or 8 for my job as the programs are not compatiable with 10 how can I do this

Unfortunately I’m not aware of an official downgrade program for Windows 10 the same way there was one when Windows 8 came out.

Hi, can I use this to remove a partial failed Windows 10 upgrade from my Windows 7 computer? The upgrade got stuck on 99% and never completed but it has done something because when I start my computer I get the black screen of death, even though the computer is still running Windows 7. I just want whatever has happened as part of the failed upgrade to be gone…
@Anna: It depends on what stage the setup reached. It doesn’t hurt to try; it won’t do anything to a Windows 7 installation.
Not to be rude, but this rollback utility is completely useless lol. Windows actually lets you rollback within a month, so there’s no need for this utility.
@Snowe and if the upgrade completely messed up your PC such that you cannot boot into Windows?
Utility CD doesn’t appear to work at all on any PC I’ve tried it on… always goes to a grub rescue prompt. Set command shows hd31 is assigned to prefix and root on ever PC I tried it on no matter how many physical drives exist. Something seems to be wrong with the current download iso file content. IDK.
@Michael211: Most common cause is using Rufus or another USB creation utility instead of our (free) Easy USB Creator.
I used Nero. The CD it made from the ISO image is perfectly readable I can view all the files and folders… so what’s the difference may I ask? Note that I burned the ISO file to a CD, not USB… is the ISO image only supposed to work on a USB thumbdrive?
Note from your description of the utility above, “… all you have to do is copy it to a USB, CD, or DVD…”. I burned it to a CD using Nero and the CD image is perfectly readable. Is that a problem?
Also above you directed people to ask questions in the support forums only, which I did and the only reply I received was to post my question to your comments here… LOL! I feel so confused at this point. Arghhh!

Ok… so the ISO file for Windows 10 Rollback Utility only works with the NeoSmart burning programs then. I did not know that. The resulting CD I just burned appears to be working quite differently than the same CD burned with Nero (even though the CD contents appear to be identical). I got a graphical environment and the option to run Easy Recovery Essentials this time (which I am currently doing). Will let you know how it turns out…. but thanks!
Well no joy… doesn’t appear to be any archived OS, no Rollback option appears. I guess now I’m stuck trying to find a fix for this busted Win 10 upgrade… not sure why there isn’t an archived OS since this pc never managed to actually boot into Win 10 it craters long before the Win 10 GUI starts.
@Michael211: It’s actually not our burning program – it’s just that Nero sucks at creating bootable CDs while ImgBurn and ActiveISO get it right.
Well, never had any problem with burning CD’s even bootable ones with Nero before so… at any rate, even after purchasing the full Easy Repait/Recovery Utility yesterday and trying it this machine is still un-bootable; I’ve pretty much given up on Win 10, it’s toast! Looks like I’ll be reformatting and putting Win 7 back on it and keeping it at Win 7 for the foreseeable future. Regards and thanks!
Hi, I have only just come across your website & therefore program to ‘rollback’ a disliked Windows 10 back to Windows 7 – however am I too late? The PC is a refurbished one that came with Windows 7 – the product key is obviously ok- I have had the PC for a year & I haven’t had any ‘not a genuine copy of windows’ message or similar. I ‘upgraded’ to Windows 10 from the 7 easily enough, but now some months later I am sick of Windows 10 & just want my Windows 7 back, but of course the 30 day or 10 day official MS allowable ‘downgrade’ period has passed. I have just last night ‘reset’ the Windows 10 back to a clean start hoping that I would be left with Windows 7 again (seeings that was the original OS, but alas no – all I got was a cleaned up ‘original’ version of Windows 10. So I am thinking if that didn’t recover back Windows 7 & there are no ‘Windows 7 old’ files on the PC will this tool work (to reinstall Windows 7)?
Eventually I would like to have a triple boot system with a Linux distro / Windows 7 / Windows 10 (only because 7 will inevitably not be supported in time), but that is for a different day – the priority is to get Windows 7 back at the moment.

Thank you for the effort of not just creating but utmsot sharing Windows 10 Rollback Utility unto the public. Yes, I’m a little late in upgrading my laptop for the reason that my colleagues said that Windows 10 sucks. But I guess they’re wrong. But there’s this one question that keeps on running on my mind. Does your rollback utility require a factory restore partition to be present?
My computer has been acting up since I upgraded to Windows 10, and I’ve been thinking of reverting back to Windows 8. This is really useful. Thanks!

Hello, I did try to use the tool on a Windows 10 Upgrade from Windows 7 and wanted to rollback. Sadly the button ” get started” in the recovery part of Windows 10 did not work, so I used your tool which told me: ” This installation of Windows is too new etc………check for an updated release.”
Is there an updated Version of your tool?
